Coaching Instruction to promote Player Development-Click. We have a lot of content posted that can be reviewed. Feel free to ask questions. If you want to get in depth we will get Westley to help explain it. We are always willing to talk about youth sports and soccer!
Schedule: Please check out the group schedules on our REC PAGE. They will not change. The schedule was created using a round robin format. We have games occur during the week and on weekends for each team. If you find that you are playing another team too many times please work with other coaches and make game day adjustments. We are always playing either way! Anyone who wants to come and watch on any given day is fun for us and the kids!

Practice Sessions: Play-Practice-Play Model. Promote and teach proper ball handling fundamentals, dribbling, passing and shooting. Create small sided games by dividing your section of field in half. Ask questions. How do you do something? Why do you do something? Keep it simple. In time it will all come together and our kids will grow into more competitive soccer players.

PLAY. When players arrive, hand out pinnies and introduce them to the small sided game. Match ups do not need to be perfect but keep competitive. Make cone goals for each direction of play. Do not over instruct, just get them playing the game.

PRACTICE. Dribble, passing and shooting. Refer to technical practice drills and fun games to promote dribbling, passing and shooting. Focus on one tap, one step for dribbling. Even though we are practicing we are always trying to move and play!

PLAY. Finish the training session by playing within your own team or play with the other team on your field. If you split the field in half with cones and play sideways you can get two 4v4 small sided games going with less kids sitting around. You can use cones to create goals. Each coach(s) can manage the flow and substitution of one side of the field. This will maximize our field space, touches and keep our kids moving!
Game Play: When players arrive, introduce them to the small sided game to warm up for fifteen minutes. When playing the game. We understand that situations arise or an opportunity to do something different for a better game experience occurs. Make necessary adjustments together. Promote cheering for your teammates when on the sideline. When in possession of the ball the goal is to create dribbling, passing and shooting opportunities by player separation and attacking. When a team is not in possession of the ball the goal is to steal the ball and at the same time create a dribbling or passing opportunity to start an attack.

Suggested Game Formations:

PreK-K - 4v4. The goal is to play a diamond formation. This will include one Forward, one Right, one Left and one Back. Every player should play all positions. Remember, instead of saying defense, say Back. Essentially, everyone is playing defense when we are not in possession of the ball. We will be providing additional content.

Ball goes out of bounds on the sideline. We will not be doing throw-ins at this age level. Coach should reintroduce and toss the ball around the middle of the field.

The opponents of the player who last touched the ball will perform a throw-in. Teach throwing the ball over your head with two hands while keeping both feet on the ground. It does not need to be perfect.

Corner Kick - Performed by a player on the attacking/offensive team when the defending team last touches the ball before it goes over the goal line. The ball is placed on the corner arc on the side the ball went out. The attacking team will reset their players to receive the corner kick. The opposing team will reset their players and must be at least ten yards away from the ball.

Goal Kick - Performed by a player on the defending team when the attacking/offensive team last touches the ball before it goes over the goal line. It is the opposite of a Corner Kick. The defending team that is now going on the attack will reset their players to receive the goal kick in front of the build-out line. The ball is placed in the goal box for the player to kick. The opposing team must be behind the build-out line while the kick is being performed. Technically, the ball is live once it is kicked and the opposing team can step up and steal it. Some players are more aggressive than others so manage this if it gets too lopsided.

3rd-4th Grade - 7v7. Includes goalie. Please review our 7v7 Formations. This is the same information that we provide for HFC Competitive teams at U9/U10. The concepts are the same and this is the introduction to position roles within team formations. Feel free to ask questions about the numbering system. If you want to get in depth we will get Westley to help explain it! Keep it simple and start with the 3-2-1 Formation.

Weather: The city will notify field closures by 3PM of the current day. You can sign up for text notifications from the city by texting CITYFIELDS to 888777. If you see lighting you must cancel your training or game. If you are thinking about canceling, communicate with the other coach on your field to have an appropriate plan. We will keep definining and communicating this process.
